Dear OADN Members:

Happy New Year and welcome to 2018!  I hope everyone had a beautiful holiday season with a well-deserved break.  As the New Year approaches most individuals begin to think of a fresh start with new goals and resolutions.  For me, it is more of a time of reflection on the previous year.  I am extremely proud of the OADN Board of Directors and the work that they have accomplished over the past.  The employment of Bryan Hoffman as the Deputy Director has been an excellent addition to the organization as he brings a wealth of knowledge in so many areas.  Many of you attended the recently held convention and heard about the many OADN activities in 2017.  However, many of you were not able to attend and as a result, I would like to share the year in review.  Although it is impossible to discuss everything, I wanted to highlight some of our key initiatives and accomplishments.

OADN continues to strengthen and reinforce the role of Associate Degree Nursing across the health care landscape.  As a national nursing organization, OADN achieves this through collaboration across education, practice, leadership, and advocacy with a wide array of organizations and constituencies.  As OADN’s CEO, I work with the board to represent our membership in the spheres where these relationships are fostered, bringing the voice of Associate Degree Nursing to national meetings, coalition forums, leadership panels and to policy makers and regulators.  

In the spirit of new partnerships, this year OADN co-founded the National Education Progression in Nursing Collaborative, or NEPIN.  Together with the OADN Foundation, National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers, innovative academic institutions, and other important partners, NEPIN will continue the efforts of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Academic Progression in Nursing (APIN) program. NEPIN will bring a national focus to identify, support and scale up practices that advance academic progression for all nurses and nursing students. Through NEPIN, the OADN Foundation and OADN are now leading the conversation on academic progression and advancing the indispensable voice of Associate Degree Nursing on this crucial issue.  

OADN continues with other vital partnerships including the American Red Cross. This exciting 2017 initiative provides opportunities for OADN members to contribute to American Red Cross programs across the country. The agreement paves the way for OADN to help support American Red Cross chapters in helping people across the country. Additionally, a template for an Academic Service Learning Experience has been developed to be used at local American Red Cross chapters. OADN member schools and the local American Red Cross chapter can use the template to develop clinical agreements that will provide practical learning opportunities and/or clinical experiences.

Within the last month, the OADN Board of Directors announced a new partnership with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The goal of this partnership is to increase the benefits and the efficacy of the support network for associate degree nursing (ADN) programs and their students. Both the ACEN and OADN will be able to improve their outreach efforts to support ADN programs, and will be able to enhance and supplement their current professional development offerings, benefitting both the ACEN’s accredited programs and OADN’s members.  The partnership will facilitate ACEN accredited programs and OADN members access to timely and important information about academic progression, which will further advance the success of graduates from ADN programs.

Our exclusive partnership with CastleBranch helps provide numerous scholarship opportunities to our members.  Most recently, OADN is working closely with CastleBranch as they launch their new product, CB Bridges.  It is a centralized, online platform designed to digitally manage the entire process of a nursing student’s clinical education. Using CB Bridges, OADN members will be able to facilitate every aspect of the process, including clinical placement, scheduling, compliance tracking, time management and evaluations. Built to empower educators, hospitals and students, the platform will reduce the administrative burden associated with managing the clinical education process, identify underutilized placement opportunities, and strengthen relationships between academic institutions and their respective health care delivery partners, and ultimately long-term workforce planning.

Our work with Quality and Safety Education (QSEN) is another example of the many partnerships.  OADN has developed an ADN QSEN task force that now also serves the role of the QSEN national ADN task force.  OADN also has other key educational partners that provide many benefits to our members through tuition discounts, webinars, and other programs.  Some of the key educational partners are:  Western Governors University, University of Phoenix, Southern New Hampshire University, Capella University, Kaplan Nursing, Nurse Tim, Sylvia Rayfield and Associates, Colorado Center for Excellence, Nurses Service Organization, and Medical Assault/Accident Group LLC.  OADN is extremely pleased to have formed all of these partnerships that are a direct member benefit. 

OADN continues to be deeply engaged in the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC), which we helped co-found in 2014. The mission of the NOBC is to improve the health of the nation through the service of nurses on boards and other bodies, where the voice of a nurse brings a distinct and diverse perspective that is uniquely connected to the needs communities and families.  The NOBC is working on a state strategy to ensure that the initiative is reaching all stakeholders in each state. With a goal of at least 10,000 nurses on boards by 2020, we are making great progress.

We also continue to grow and strengthen OADN’s relationships with our peer national nursing associations.  This includes, the American Association of Colleges of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) which continues to include OADN representation in key national meetings with their membership and invited us to share comments on their draft position produced by the AACN Academic Progression in Nursing Task Force.  It is imperative that OADN maintain an open and constructive dialogue with the baccalaureate and higher programs that AACN represents.  Along with AACN, OADN continues to collaborate with other nursing organizations including the National League for Nursing (NLN), National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA), American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), The Center to Champion Nursing in America at AARP, and the American Nurses Association (ANA), of which OADN is an organizational affiliate. OADN frequently presents, exhibits, and works with these organizations to develop resources like the Nursing Student Resources Guide to assist students who are thinking about attending nursing school and providing them with valuable information and resources.

OADN is not only collaborating on the national level, we’re also representing Associate Degree Nursing at the local and international levels.  The Board of Directors and I represented OADN at numerous OADN state chapter meetings, and I am happy to report that the chapters are strong and growing.  Additionally, we’ve met with many other state deans and directors groups and are looking forward to the creation of new OADN chapters in 2018. In February, 2017 OADN represented North America on the Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau International.  While on the international level, I traveled to Barcelona, Spain to represent our organization at the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress where I shared how Associate Degree Nursing is leading change and advancing health in the United States.  In July, OADN completed its first faculty immersion experience to Guatemala.   The trip was a huge success providing healthcare to a remote community.  We look forward to continuing our international humanitarian work to Guatemala as well as partnering with Nurse Tim with his trips to Haiti. 

Beyond nursing organizations, OADN remains a leader in education and health care, where we continue to educate community college presidents, trustees, and other leaders about the role of nursing and health care in the community college system.  OADN has lead dialogues with the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), the Community College Baccalaureate Association (CCBA), and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), of which OADN is an affiliated council and a member of the AACC’s Economic and Workforce Development Commission.  OADN also continues to serve as a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education, while also providing guidance to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on the role of Associate Degree nursing in interprofessional education and population health.

On the federal advocacy front, OADN is very proud to be one of the fifty-eight-member organizations of the Nursing Community, supporting the coalition’s advocacy work at the highest level.  The Nursing Community’s outstanding work on behalf of the nursing profession, healthcare, and the many issues facing is to be commended.  Our voice is being heard in Washington DC through the work of the Nursing Community, where we continue to advocate for Title VIII funding to maintain and strengthen the nation’s nursing workforce and lobby for sensible, patient-centered health care reform that empowers nurses to improve the health and welfare of individuals and communities.  

Our new faculty agency membership structure that was introduced this year has been an enormous success and our membership continues to grow. There are at least two states working on chapter formation.   Our Alpha Delta Nu Chapters are 139 strong and emphasizes the scholarship of ADN students.    

I believe you can see OADN is ensuring that the voice of Associate Degree Nursing is present, strong, and growing in the many spheres of influence important to our members.  Wherever OADN is, we always carry forward the message that our members are dedicated to educating and inspiring the future nursing workforce. Because of you, new nurses have the knowledge, skills and abilities to care for patients and impact lives.
