year of nurse square

Dear OADN Members:

In this Year of the Nurse and Midwife we celebrate all nursing educators and the important work you do in preparing the next generation of the nursing workforce. You know first-hand the challenges students face and work tirelessly to help them conquer tremendous obstacles, achieve their goal, and go on to build healthier communities. Your unwavering innovative spirit is show in the creativity you employ to address clinical placements, simulation, continual curriculum revisions, and a host of other issues.

As nurse educators, this work is just part of being a nurse. Nurses are humble. Nurse educators are not in their role for recognition, but are there for a passion. We must support each other and applaud our accomplishments, no matter how large or minute. It is for this reason I ask all of you who read this message to begin to think about yourself and a colleague to celebrate. Research has shown that a formal recognition of nurses through celebration can assist in shaping a workforce. Perhaps, consider these two ways to encourage this acknowledgement.

First, the Academy of Associate Degree Nursing (AADN). The Academy recognizes individuals who model exemplary dedication to associate degree nursing education and practice and have worked as change agents to advance health and education through associate degree nursing. As ADN educators you are there to guide students through a challenging course of study, lend an ear or a Kleenex, and stand with pride when they graduate. Please consider applying or nominating a colleague to become a fellow. More information can be found at

Second, The Daisy Foundation Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. OADN is a supporting organization of The Daisy Foundation as we share their commitment in recognizing the extraordinary compassionate work of nurses. Ultimately, the nursing faculty make a difference on the patients the student will care for in the future. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty provides an opportunity to honor committed faculty members who are inspirational educators and mentors and whose efforts have a demonstrated impact on patient care. As many nursing programs face faculty recruitment, retention and engagement issues this is the perfect time to consider celebrating faculty who are making a difference to the future of nursing. The DAISY Foundation a few short weeks ago released their story in the book entitled, Shining the Light On all the Right.” It once again made me realize the important work all of us have done as members of the nursing profession. It touched my heart and soul, with some tears and made me say, “We must CELEBRATE each other!” We are unique and truly are the unsung heroes in many ways. The importance of genuine, authentic recognition should never be discounted.

In celebration of your passion,
