Below is a summary of the Nursing Community (NC) coalition’s activity for the month of January 2017.
The NC passed the proposal to implement a Steering Committee to ensure timely communications to the Hill and the new Administration. The Steering Committee is currently operating under a six-month trial basis. It consists of Suzanne Miyamoto (AACN-Colleges), Ralph Kohl (AANA), MaryAnne Sapio (AANP), Tim Casey (ANA), Jo Ann Webb (AONE), Dave Mason (NAPNAP), Elliot Vice (NCSBN),Christine Murphy (NLN), and Alec Stone (ONS).
On January 19, 2017, the Steering Committee sent a letter to the leadership in the House and Senate as well as Committees of Jurisdiction pledging to work with them to critically assess where change is needed and to preserve critical advancements made in recent years to improve our healthcare system. The Steering Committee sent out an additional letter on January 27, 2017 outlining the NC’s overarching healthcare reform priorities.
The NC sent out ten letters in 2016 and had a record number of Congressional and Administrative meetings. The NC letter to the New Administration was one of the top letters supported in 2016 with 60 signatory organizations.
The NC held their January monthly meeting on January 3rd and was hosted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. There were 37 NC organizations present for the discussion.
