Below is a summary of the Nursing Community Coalition’s (NCC) activity for the month of December.
Letter to Captain Sophia Russell
The Steering Committee sent a congratulatory letter on behalf of the coalition to the newly appointed Director of the Division of Nursing and Public Health within the Health Resources and Services Administration, Captain Sophia Russell. The letter noted our mutual interest in growing the pipeline of registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses to provide care in rural and underserved communities. The Steering Committee also requested a meeting with her to discuss those interests.
Letter on H.R. 795/S.796
Thirty-five organizations signed on to the letters thanking Representatives Rodney Davis (R-IL) and Scott Peters (D-CA) as well as Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), John Thune (R-SD), and Angus King (I-ME) for introducing the Employer Participation in Student Loan Assistance Act (H.R. 795) and the Employer Participation in Repayment Act (S.796), respectively.
Congressional Briefing
“The Opioids Crisis: Nursing Practices that Save Lives”
On December 7, 2017, the Nursing Community Coalition hosted a Congressional briefing featuring four nursing experts who each offered a different perspective on how the profession is on the front lines of saving patients impacted by opioid addiction. Representative Paul Tonko (D-NM) provided remarks at the beginning of the briefing regarding his work with Representative Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) to introduce the Addiction Treatment Access Improvement Act of 2017 (H.R. 3692). The event was standing room only with a number of Congressional offices and stakeholders in attendance for the discussion.
