Below is a summary of the Nursing Community (NC) coalition’s activity for the months of October and November.

Appropriations Update

Thank you to the 56 coalition members who signed on to the letters, dated October 26, 2016, that were sent to the House and Senate Appropriations Committee leadership to reinforce the FY2017 request levels for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs and National Institute of Nursing Research.

Legislation Advances in the House

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Title VIII Reauthorization Act (H.R. 2713) and the Improving Access to Maternity Care Act (H.R. 1209) on November 14, 2016. Both pieces of legislation were referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on November 15, 2016. Nursing Community organizations continue to advocate for their passage in the Senate.

In the News

As the new Administration takes shape, the NC will be sending a letter to the transition team. This is currently in circulation for organizations to sign on. Thank you to the Transition Workgroup-Dave Mason (NAPNAP), JoAnn Webb (AONE), Jan Towers (AANP), Piper Largent (NASN), and Suzanne Miyamoto (AACN-Colleges) for their work on this document.

Meetings

The NC held their October monthly meeting on October 4th and was hosted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. There were 28 NC organizations present for the discussion. The NC held their November monthly meeting on November 1st and was hosted by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. There were 29 NC organizations present for the discussion.
