Tammy Sawmelle, Ph.D., MSN, RN

Candidate for Southeast Region Representative

Tammy Sawmelle

I am honored to submit my candidacy for consideration to serve on the Board of Directors as the Director of the Southeastern Region. My career in nursing spans more than 30 years, with experience ranging from bedside care in pediatric intensive care to leading large-scale academic initiatives across multiple institutions.

As Interim Associate Provost and Dean of Nursing and Education at State College of Florida, I have launched evening/weekend and dual-language ASN programs, maintained NCLEX pass rates above 90 percent, and managed over four million dollars in grant and operational funding annually. My leadership focuses on quality, innovation, and accessibility, which are values that align closely with OADN’s mission.

I have chaired successful accreditation efforts, led statewide RN to BSN curriculum alignment, and currently serve as a Peer Reviewer and Chair for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). My doctoral research focused on educational evaluation and adult learning theory, and I remain committed to data-driven, student-centered outcomes.

I am a first-generation college graduate, a mother, and a mentor who believes that associate degree programs are critical pathways to equity in healthcare. I bring energy, strategic thinking, and an unwavering commitment to advancing associate degree nursing education.

OADN represents the voice of a critical sector in healthcare education. I would be honored to serve and support our region’s institutions as we address persistent issues such as clinical placement challenges, faculty recruitment, and preparing the next generation of nurses who are resilient, responsive, and committed to delivering high-quality care.
