Candidate Statement

My nursing career began at a community college located near a military post. I was graced with “extra points” because my husband was active duty. I was lucky to get accepted; almost none of my friends did. I finished with my ADN and a nebulous future plan to become a nursing educator who would make nursing school more accessible.

I realized that vision at Central New Mexico Community College. CNM serves a community where roughly 50% of its students identify as first-generation college attendees. Our K-12 system ranks dead last nationally. Yet, we achieve excellence while still removing barriers. Our program completion and pass rates are strong (85% and 92% respectively). But this success is shockingly expensive. My work has shown me not only what a quality prelicensure ADN degree actually costs, but also how rarely that story is shared at tables where the decisions about funding are made. This must change so we can truly grow.

My career is influenced by servant leadership. I support New Mexico through leadership in our nursing curriculum organization (NMNEC). I also serve at the national level. The RELX Group invited me to present to the U.S. House Nursing Caucus as the sole community college voice. Of greatest pride: I have served the ACEN for 13 years at every volunteer level from site visitor to outgoing Board Chairman.

I bring to OADN a commitment to inclusionary practices and the experience to share this story where it matters most. I would be honored to serve.
