Dear OADN Community,
A few days ago, I reached out to a faculty member at one of our OADN program institutions schools and invited him to co-author a chapter with me in an upcoming book. This simple act reflects a practice I’ve long embraced: to bring an emerging educator, leader, or scholar along on every project I undertake. Whether through writing, presenting, or policy work, I believe in making space for others, especially those newer to the profession, so they, too, can find their voice and pathway in nursing leadership.
As we celebrate National Nurses Week, I want to take a moment to recognize and honor The Power of Nurses ™, the American Nurses Association’s inspiring theme this year. OADN’s power lies not only in our strategic direction priorities of advocacy, education, leadership, and community (read our strategic plan) but also in our deep commitment to each other, to our students, and to the communities we serve. The ADN community is VITAL to the RN Workforce.
This week reminds us that our collective success is not defined solely by individual achievements. As we continue to climb, we must reach back and lift those coming behind us, because true success is not just about rising—but about rising together. Whether you’re guiding a student, supporting a new colleague, or contributing to your community, your impact matters.
As a meaningful way to celebrate the power of nursing, I invite you to honor a colleague or student by gifting them the opportunity of an OADN Foundation Award or Scholarship. Your encouragement could open doors they never thought possible.
For our senior ADN students planning to enter acute or critical care practice, please share the AACN’s $2,500 scholarship opportunity. And for faculty and students alike, the OADN Foundation has several Calls for Applications currently open: explore all our Foundation Awards and Scholarships.
In addition, the Call for Applications to the Academy of Associate Degree Nursing is now open. This is a meaningful opportunity to elevate leaders who exemplify excellence in ADN education and service. Self-nominations are welcome from individuals currently serving as nurse educators in college or university-based ADN programs. Additionally, those who champion and support ADN education, even outside of direct academic roles, may be nominated for consideration as Honorary Fellows in the Academy of Associate Degree Nursing.
Later this month, we’ll also issue the Call for Nominations to serve on the OADN Board of Directors and Nominations Committee. I encourage you to consider stepping up. OADN’s mission advances through the passion and dedication of volunteers who commit their time, talent, and leadership to the profession—and to the future of associate degree nursing. Thank you for the care you provide, the knowledge you share, and the lives you touch. During Nurses Week and always, we celebrate you and the immeasurable power you bring to nursing.
With deep appreciation,
Rick García PhD, RN, CCM, FAAOHN, FNYAM, FAADN
